HAWA has received grants from Janirve Foundation and PetCo that will allow HAWA to continue the $30 rate for spay/neuter surgery. Penny Wallace, HAWA’s President said, "The response to the lowered rate in 2008 was so encouraging we just had to continue to offer surgery at the lower rate if we could. These new grants will allow us to continue providing surgeries at $30."

Last year HAWA sent 1124 dogs/cats to Humane Alliance in Asheville for spay/neuter surgeries. With the help of donations and special gifts from three large donors, HAWA provided surgeries for free for the pets whose owners were receiving government income assistance. Ms. Wallace added, "HAWA can continue providing free surgeries and keeping the rate affordable by subsidizing all other surgeries by $20 each as long as our funds keep coming in. Donations play a major part in our overall funding. Please consider being part of the solution to the pet overpopulation problem in Haywood County. Donate so that unwanted litters of puppies and kittens don't keep ending up at the county shelter and euthanized."
