|
|
The Haywood Animal Welfare Association held its 2008 annual meeting at the Haywood County Public Library’s downstairs meeting room on April 24th, 2008 starting at 6:30. Instead of the business end of the meeting, Penny Wallace, President of HAWA,decided to start with our special guest speakers from the Spartanburg Humane Society in order that they could leave earlier for the long drive back to Spartanburg,SC.
Natalie DiGiacomo, Vice President of Development/Outreach Programs of the Spartanburg Humane Society spoke first. She presented a power point
presentation on the Humane Society dealing with its mission, number of
animals served, the society’s history, and the need to start an
outreach education program in that community.
Ingrid Norris, Education Coordinator spoke next on the various programs
Spartanburg has for the school system. She passed out three scripted
programs that their volunteers present to the various grades. Each lesson had an objective and also what part of the school curriculum these presentations addressed. Math and Character
Education were the main ones with language skills being addressed by
students scripting their own PSA announcement and recording it.
Ingrid than showed some of the tools used in putting on these presentations, including a spay/neuter doctor’s kit (Fischer Price) and demonstrated taking third graders thru a “spay” done on a velcroed dog slipper. Questions from the audience were addressed by Ingrid and Natalie.
HAWA hopes to be able to get an educational program up and running in the schools in the near future with the help of volunteers.
